Arts & Letters Live
Cathy Marie Buchanan & Robin Oliveira
February 18, 2014; 7:30 p.m.
Cathy Marie Buchanan’s novel, The Painted Girls, is inspired by Edgar Degas’ sculpture Little Dancer Aged 14. Buchanan’s novel is a captivating story of fate, tarnished ambition and the ultimate triumph of sisterly love. Robin Oliveira’s forthcoming novel, I Always Loved You, brilliantly evokes the irresistible world of Belle Époque Paris. The story revolves around a young Mary Cassatt, whose path crosses with Degas, thus beginning the defining period of her life and one of the most tempestuous of relationships.
6:30 p.m. Enjoy tours of works by Degas and Cassatt in the DMA’s collection.

From finger paint to play dough and crayons to watercolor, preschool artists are never afraid to get their hands a little bit messy. Isn’t it just as important to keep their artistic minds busy too? In this workshop for preschool teachers, we’ll focus on the connection between looking at art and creating art. Whether your preschool students investigate the illustrations of a favorite picture book or the brushstrokes of a Monet painting, close looking at a work of art fosters curiosity, imagination and creative thinking.
