With Independence Day just around the corner, loud fireworks can send frightened pets running from home. To help keep more pets safe and reunited with their families, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is hosting a free pet microchipping event on Sunday, June 28, from Noon to 4 p.m. at the shelter, 1818 N. Westmoreland Road.
Fireworks are one of the leading causes of lost pets during the Fourth of July holiday. In fact, Dallas Animal Services took in 100 stray pets over the July 4 weekend last year, making this one of the busiest times of the year for the shelter.
“Fireworks may be fun for people, but they can be terrifying for pets,” said Paul Ramon, director of Dallas Animal Services. “A microchip provides a permanent form of identification that can make all the difference when it comes to reuniting lost pets with their families.”
In addition to microchipping, DAS encourages pet owners to:
- Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays.
- Make sure collars fit properly and ID tags have current contact information.
- Verify that microchip registration details are up to date.
- Create a quiet, comfortable space where pets can feel secure.
- Exercise pets earlier in the day to help reduce stress.
- Leave pets safely at home during fireworks celebrations.
Taking a few simple precautions now can help prevent a stressful search later. Pet owners are encouraged to attend the free event before the busy holiday weekend and give their furry family members an extra layer of protection.
