Informate DFW got the opportunity to sit and chat with Dirty Dancing Musical star Joshua Keith and his role in Dirty Dancing Musical, premiering on Tuesday, June 23rd at 7 pm at Music Hall in Fair Park.
IDFW: Tell us about your role in Dirty Dancing?
JK: I cover the role of Tito Suarez.
IDFW:How did you know this was a project that you wanted to work in?
JK: I watched it since I was little and as you get older you start to realize that you want to be a part of it. And then you get to tour! I wanted to do New York. I wanted to go on tour and see what tour life is like. And then to tour with a production that is going to sell. It’s a great thing. Seeing the movie made me want to be part of the production and then Patrick Schwayze dancing. That really attracted me to the play. And then to think of the response to the movie and now to the play.
IDFW: Was it easy for you to land this role?
JK: Well it took awhile. We had about 3 weeks of callbacks. It was weeks and weeks and weeks of callbacks. But I believe that what is for you, is for you. It is hard to find secure long lasting jobs like a tour. If you sign a contract of a tour for a year, then you know that you have the security of having a job for a year. That is very difficult to land. You work contractually. When you’re on Broadway, it could get bad reviews, the show could close and then you’re unemployed. But when you book a tour, you’re constantly employed for that tour. So those are hard to land because people usually don’t want to let those go.
IDFW: Any other future projects that you would want to be a part of?
JK: I would love to be a part of another first national tour. I would love to be on Broadway and of course be a part of an original production. It’s very refreshing.
IDFW: First time in Dallas?
JK: It is and in Fort Worth.
IDFW: Any place you want to visit?
JK: Actually, yes! A church. The Potters House with TD Jakes. I love his books and his teachings. I don’t know if i’ll have time but i’ll love to visit on a Sunday morning.
