Starry Van Gogh is an original creation by Teatro Flor Candela artistic director Patricia Urbina based on the life of painter Vincent Van Gogh. The play was first showcased in 2012 as part of the project “Teatro en Casas” (theater in homes), whose objective was to bring scenes into people’s houses, where they are able to invite their families and neighbors to enjoy a play in their own living rooms. After receiving excellent reviews, Teatro Flor Candela has presentedStarry Van Gogh in venues throughout Dallas, including the Bath House Cultural Center and the Latino Cultural Center.

THE FACTORY OF DREAMS: INSIDE MEXICO’S SOAP OPERAS BY STEFAN RUIZ
Over the past several years, Stefan Ruiz has gained special access to Mexico’s Televisa studios, known as “The Factory of Dreams,” where nearly 50,000 hours’ worth of telenovelas (soap operas) are produced and exported annually to more than 100 countries. Stefan Ruiz’s photographs of the factory and its people portray a behind-the-scenes look at this special place with humor and affection. Ruiz’s photographs reveal a secret world of elaborate and surreal studio sets, and they include portraits of television stars in character as well as students being groomed for future celebrity status at the Televisa “soap school.” This is the world of beautiful women, handsome men, and rags-to-riches Cinderella stories, all of which expose the underlying fantasies of social aspiration in societies with entrenched racial hierarchies.
ELLA: EXHIBITING LOCAL LATINA ARTISTS
Paired with growing awareness of women’s issues in the community, local Latina artists depict their personal narratives through varying art forms at the LCC. The selected local Latinas utilize various methods as mediums to communicate their work as artists. The artists included in the exhibition are Emily Don Juan, Jessica Fuentes, Gina Garza, Marian Lefeld, Lupita Murrillo-Tinen, Coco Rico, Patricia Rodriguez, and Brenda Solis.
Both exhibitions are free and open to the public.

The Magic Rainforest: An Amazon Journey is a play about a young boy named Aki and his quest to become a warrior. However, when the fire demon threatens to destroy his village and the surrounding sacred forest, he departs on an adventure into a mystical world where each animal and plant has their own remarkable voice. Aki uncovers the truth about his past and amazing abilities to combat the fire demon, but is the fire demon really what it seems?
In this regional premiere by award winning playwright José Cruz González, Cara Mía Theatre Co. creates a tropical world with movement, light and sound to explore the magical connection we all have with nature. In partnership with the Big Thought Thriving Minds program, the LCC will work with Cara Mía Theatre Co. to explore themes of the community through theater, creative writing, dance, cinematography, culinary art and visual art. Students will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with professionally trained artists to deepen their understanding of arts-based practices and inspire them to be creative in everyday life and excel academically. Open to students 11-14 years old in 5-8th grade. Final student performance will be held Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 2:00pm.
